Since 1986, the MYEP has worked to prepare Charlotte’s youth for future employment. The program focuses on leveraging relationships with businesses and the community to provide meaningful, career oriented internships for participants. MYEP participants are motivated high school students recommended to the Mayor’s Youth Employment Program (MYEP) by Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) Career Development Counselors (CDCs) who refer from the entire school.
What is a MYEP Internship?
- Internships begin in June and conclude in August.
- Internships are generally eight-weeks (8) in duration (can be adjusted to fit employer’s needs).
- Students work at least 20 hours per week, at a minimum rate of $8.00 per hour.
- Student interns are monitored closely throughout the summer by the MYEP staff.
- In some cases, our student interns are available to continue work for the host employer throughout the school year.
- As a participant in MYEP, students will receive job mentoring, coaching and valuable hands-on experience with one of our business partners.
- Past partners/employers are listed here: http://charmeck.org/city/charlotte/mayor/myep/Pages/Sponsors.aspx
What are the qualifications?
The Mayor’s Youth Employment Program (MYEP) will be providing FREE work readiness and soft skills training for 30 Merancas students; 15 candidates from Merancas will be selected from those who attend this training to continue the application process. To be considered for a MYEP internship, attendance at this training is mandatory. (For more information about Career Readiness Training Certification see page 7 in the Student Handbook). After training, recommended students will have the opportunity to apply and interview for a PAID summer 8-week internship with one of the many Charlotte business partners for a summer internship. There is no guarantee of placement. Students who are not chosen to continue the application process will still be able to include the employment training on their high school resume.
The training date will be Monday, February 5, 2018 at CPCC Cato Campus for Merancas students. Bus transportation will be provided for Merancas students.
